Hartford is settled by former Dorchester and Cambridge residents.

The settlement is founded by a group from the First Church of Cambridge (then Newtowne), led by Thomas Hooker, and a group from the First Church in Dorchester, led by Rev. John Wareham, made up of members who had religious differences with the rest of the congregation.
